Folio Society, 2008.

2 vols in lidded presentation box with gold printed top and inset photo of Alice Liddell. Facsimile edition bound in dark blue goatskin leather with gilding, 96pp. Commentary volume "The Original Alice" by Sally Brown, printed soft paper cover, 32pp. This edition was limited to 3750 copies. There is a slight shadow on the top edge of the box where a price sticker has been removed but otherwise in very good condition.

This facsimile of the original hand-written and illustrated book produced by Lewis Carroll for presentation to the original Alice (Alice Liddell), with a companion book by Sally Brown, was limited to 3750 copies.

From the original Folio Society advertisement leaflet;

"It was created by Lewis Carroll for a young friend, Alice Liddell, in memory of a happy summers day in which he made up stories to entertain her and her sisters as they rowed up the river. He carefully wrote out his tale, complete with rhymes and songs, by hand, illustrating it with his own vivid drawings. Giving it the title Alice's Adventures under Ground, he had it bound in leather and, in 1864, presented it as a Christmas gift to Alice."

The facsimile volume is bound in dark blue goatskin with gilt cover title and ornamentation, but no spine title. 37 illustrations by Carroll, some full page, are integrated into the text. The title page is full colour, while elsewhere there are colour highlights. There is a limitation page at the back of the book, the endpapers are plain cream, and the page edges are gilded.

Sally Brown’s sewn softcover commentary is bound in light brown card printed with a wrap-around dark brown illustration. It was originally published by the British Library (where the facsimile original is housed) in 1997 and contains numerous photographs and illustrations.
